Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need safety chains?
Safety chains are a legal requirement in Australia. They provide a secondary connection between the tow vehicle and trailer in case the primary coupling fails. The chains need to be rated to the gross trailer mass of what you are towing.
How do I check my tow ball weight?
A tow ball weight scale sits between the coupling and the ground and gives you a reading of the downward force at the ball. Your vehicle manufacturer specifies a maximum tow ball weight, which you should not exceed. Check it with the trailer loaded and ready to travel.
What size D-shackle do I need?
Match the D-shackle rating to the safety chain rating and your trailer's gross mass. The rated capacity is stamped on the shackle. Using an undersized shackle compromises the safety chain's effectiveness.
